I Will Flourish...In My Work

Flourish in the workplace // The Kardia Before we get into the post, can I just say that I love picnics? A few days ago, my family went to the park to eat a simple picnic supper. Seeing as we live in Minnesota, our park includes a lake and a beach (side note: I love living in the land of 10,000+ lakes!). It was so nice and relaxing to eat and talk while the sun glistened off the water. Simple moments like that are my favorite.

Anyways, back to the post! This month's Flourish post is all about how we plan to flourish in our work and careers. I love this prompt because every person will have a different goals and opinions. One person might apply it to their freelance business while another might apply it to their full-time blog or even to their day job. Whatever your reason, applying work ethic goals is always a good idea.

10 Things I Am Grateful For:

  1. Rainy days
  2. Sweet friends
  3. Their dreams
  4. My dreams
  5. Birthdays
  6. Fundraisers
  7. Hope
  8. Grace
  9. Food
  10. Group text messages

I will flourish in my work / career this year by

Networking. Being a business major, I hear this all the time. But it's so true, and it even applies to blogging. Networking and reaching out to other people is a great way to expand your reach and meet others. I'm going to start putting more effort into networking by finding and connecting with others on social media as well as perfecting the art of small talk in real life.

Actively applying what I'm learning. I feel like I'm pretty good at doing this on a regular basis already, but it's something I want to continue. I love learning! If I learn something at work, like writing meeting minutes, I apply the skill of multitasking listening, writing, and talking all at once, to other areas of my life.

Taking time for personal development. Like I said, I love learning! I'd like to take more time to round out other areas of my life that I find beneficial to my future goals, such as making videos and doing styled photography.

Reflection:

Last month we wrote on how we planned to flourish in our daily routines. Streamlining my daily tasks helped a lot! I found that I had more hours to do things and felt less rushed. I unsubscribed from email newsletters I never read and single-tasked on important things. And now that I've been doing it for a month, it's become a habit! Yay!

Saying no and prioritizing things I say yes to is going to be a big thing as I head back to school. You get so bombarded with people asking you to help them with this or that. I hate saying no because it makes me feel bad. But I have to realize that my time is precious and that I need to focus on things that I put my full 100% into.

Overall, last month went really good! I did forget about setting my goals with rewards, but that's not that hard to start doing :)

Happy 3rd of July! :) I hope you all have a great Independence Day weekend! My family doesn't have too much planned, just some potlucks with our church family and maybe fireworks later tomorrow night. I also just realized that I don't have my annual red, white, and blue outfit picked out yet. Good thing I'm working today at the mall ;) Haha just kidding, I need to save my money.

Anyways, since it's the first friday of the month (already?!)  that means it's time for another Flourish linkup! Last month seemed to just fly by. This month, we're talking about ways we plan to flourish in our daily lives and routines. Daily habits isn't sometimes an area that you put much thought into because, well, they're habits already. I can't wait to hear the different ways you plan to flourish in this area!

10 Things I Am Grateful For:

  1. Opportunities brought to me through blogging
  2. My cats
  3. Smoothies
  4. The library
  5. A job, even if it doesn't pay the best
  6. Weddings!
  7. Children that remind me to enjoy the simplicity of life
  8. The sweet sound of birds chirping in the morning
  9. Summer picnics
  10. My sister

I will flourish in my daily habits / routines this year by

Streamlining my daily tasks. I'm a big fan of flexible routines, meaning I like having a vision for what the day will be like, but I know that plans can change and that's ok. To get the most out my day, I plan on multitasking at things such as breakfast, news, and emails while single-tasking at really important things, like homework, the blog, and Caleb's business. I plan on posting more about my daily routines on the blog later in August.

Doing homework in my free time. Last year I always did my homework in the evening or in a big batch on Sunday. The problem is, those are the times when I don't want to be doing homework. So in an effort to free up more time in the evenings and weekends, I'll use my breaks during the school day to finish any assignments I can rather than wasting that time on Pinterest.

Saying no. I'm a people pleaser, which means that it's really hard for me to say no when people ask me to help with something. Because of that, I start to take on too much, causing me to because overwhelmed at all the tasks I have to accomplish. This year I'll selectively choose what I want to spend my time doing. By saying no more often, I'll be able to focus on the tasks at hand and do a better job.

Setting goals with rewards. I'm also planning on setting up a reward system for my goals to help motivate me. I'll work on 1 or 2 goals at a time and mark each day off on a calendar that is displayed prominently for me to see. Another way to be kept accountable!

Reflection:

Last month we wrote on how we planned to flourish healthfully. And honestly, for the last part of the month, I was slacking on my goals :( Part of the reason why is probably because I spontaneous took a trip out for nearly a week help out at an event. When I came back, I wasn't into my routine, so my workouts and sleeping schedule got a bit thrown off. I didn't quit though! Not at all. I'm just working on getting back into that routine that I was in at the beginning of the month.

One thing that will definitely help me in the long term is goal setting. Caleb and I made a simple spreadsheet with our body measurements and weight and set goals for where we wanted to be in two years (because it takes time!). Then we divided them into quarterly goals as stepping stones to the overall goal. So every three months, we'll come back and measure ourselves and see where we need to work harder on improving. It's very motivating!

Next month’s prompt is how you will flourish in your work / career. Examples would include: steps to take to become more knowledgeable, where you want to be in the next 5 years, how you plan to improve, ways to stay current in your niche, etc. If you’re new to the linkup, you can find all of the details right here! I hope you join us sometime, because I’d love to read what you have to say!

Healthy living is a big topic. It encompasses so many different areas of life and everyone's goals are personal and different, which is why it's this month's Flourish linkup topic. Your health goals are one way to becoming the best version of yourself.

I'm really excited to read your posts on this topic, because it sure was one of my favorites! The linkup will be open until next Thursday, so feel free to add your post in anytime before that! I’d love to hear from you! :)

P.S. My goal is to someday do a headstand on a paddleboard, just like in the photo above ;)

10 Things I Am Grateful For:

  1. A home with family I love
  2. Phones, to talk to loved ones far away
  3. Fresh fruit
  4. Sleep and rest
  5. Ice cream :)
  6. Memories
  7. Long walks on Sunday mornings
  8. Community
  9. The different shapes of the clouds
  10. Wisdom from others

I will flourish healthfully this year by

Being intentional about what I eat. Over this past year I've become more aware about what I'm putting into my body. What you eat has a dramatic effect on how your body functions. Because I'm a firm believer in living a healthy lifestyle, you must read this post by my good friend Gina on 5 truths for healthy living. I'm taking her third tip to heart – my longterm goal is to eat a delicious, healthy, organic, plant-based diet that will help me reach my fitness goals.

Improving my strength and flexibility. In my Currently... post on Wednesday I mentioned that I’m focusing on improving my flexibility and getting stronger through weight lifting. Right now I'm doing at-home routines and in a few months Caleb and I will join Gold's Gym. Our goal is to build enough strength and endurance so that we can join a CrossFit gym later on.

Getting a better night's sleep. I wrote a post a few months back on ways you can ensure a more restful night. Sticking to a sleep schedule can help balance your circadian rhythms and cause you to feel more energized. So even though it's summer, I've been (trying) to go to sleep between 9-10pm and wake up at 6am to get a head start on the day and enjoy the first hours of daylight. My plan is to continue that, even once I head back to college in the fall.

Spending more time outdoors being active. I love the outdoors! Especially when I'm out being active and enjoying nature at the same time. Things such as bike riding, hiking, and canoeing are some of my favorites. I want to make sure I spend more time be active outdoors rather than just laying out in the sun.

Reflection:

Last month we wrote on how we planned to flourish emotionally.  One of my goals was to exercise more patience. By actively trying to live out a list of 50 values to renew in your life, patience has slowly become easier to manage. Instead of nagging people when we're going to be late or getting frustrated when something is taking too long, I've learned to calmly wait and even enjoy the few extra moments that I'm given by making the best of every situation, another one of my goals.

Things don't always go as planned, but a positive attitude can change everything! I’m really glad I took time to focus on flourishing emotionally, because whether it’s an area of life that most people don't actively think about trying to improve.

Next month’s prompt is how you will flourish in your daily habits and routines. Examples would include: simplifying your morning routine or work routine, how you spend your free time, a daily schedule to stick to, etc. If you’re new to the linkup, you can find all of the details right here! I hope you join us sometime, because I’d love to read what you have to say!

I Will Flourish...Emotionally

The Flourish Linkup I realized something interesting the other day.

A few months ago, when 2014 was drawing to a close, I felt this urge to live my life with values that can't be shaken and to live in a way that is purposeful and honors the Lord. I felt the need to encourage others to do so as well. That's what brought me to create the Flourish linkup, a place where dreams are supported, virtue is respected, love is overflowing, and growth is encouraged.

Over the past three months, I've discovered that there are other women out there yearning for a purposeful life. I know I am. That's why I've been writing on topics that are close to my heart, such as the list of 50 Essential Values to Renew in Your Life, A Call for Simplicity, and 100 Things to Throw Away. We are called to flourish in life! This is why I get so excited about the Flourish linkup each month! It's designed to help you evaluate and discover how you will become the best version of yourself.

This month is no exception. The prompt, how will you flourish emotionally, really makes you think! I'm excited to share my thoughts with all of you, and I can't wait to hear what you have to say as well :)

10 Things I Am Grateful For:

  1. The sound of rain
  2. Green grass
  3. Patience
  4. Scissors
  5. Handwritten letters
  6. Friends
  7. Responsibility
  8. Mouthwatering food
  9. Cuddles
  10. Cameras that capture memories

I will flourish emotionally this year by

Exercising patience. This is a hard one for me at times. When I want something to happen or if I want to be somewhere, I want it to happen nowThankfully, that's not how the world works and God is slowly showing me how to be more patient. Patience is a Fruit of the Spirit that I want to have in any situation.

Stopping the comparison game. The internet makes it really easy to gain insight to the lives of others. If looked at positively, you can learn things that will enhance your life. If abused, you might find yourself comparing your life to theirs. The truth is, my life will not be the same as my Pinterest one. But that's ok. My life is beautiful just the way it is, and so is yours! Let's stop the comparison game and focus on our real, incredibly unique lives.

Taking more breaks. To avoid feeling overwhelmed and overworked, I want to schedule times throughout the day where I can step back and relax. I've found that when I set a reminder on my phone/computer to take a break at a certain time, I can come back feeling refreshed and energized.

Making the best of every situation. Things don't always go as planned. Being somewhat of a perfectionist, it's hard for me to stay positive once I realize the plan isn't happening the way I wanted it to. To change that, I'm going to think creatively and adapt to things as they happen. A positive attitude can change everything!

Reflection:

Last month we wrote on how we planned to flourish in our relationships with others.  One of my goals was to spend more time with my friends and family. When I prioritized what was important in my life, my friends and family were up at the top. I realized that since I didn't seem to have any time to spend with them, I needed to start making time for them. I did this in a few ways.

I began visiting my best friends' room at night when I got back to the dorm (they're twins!). Since we all have different schedules, we don't see each other very often. Stopping by to say hello and chat for a few minutes helps us stay connected and share exciting things that have happened to us. I look forward to it every night!

I also decided not to work over spring break so that I could spend more time at home, with my family. It was so nice to relax and be, well, home.

I'm really glad I'm focusing more on my relationships with others, because whether it's a good relationship or a not-so-good one, how we interact with others directly impacts us. I plan on continuing to flourish in this area of life each and every day :)

Next month's prompt is how you will flourish healthfully. Examples would include: changing different aspects of your diet, your exercise regimen, goals such as drinking enough water or going to sleep by a certain time, etc. If you're new to the linkup, you can find all of the details right here! I hope you join us sometime, because I'd love to read what you have to say!

I Will Flourish...In Relationships With Others

The Flourish Linkup with The KardiaI honestly can not believe it is March already. February was so short! But I guess it did have only 28 days. Because of that, it's now the first friday in March, which means...it's time for the second Flourish linkup! :)

10 Things I Am Grateful For:

  1. My parents and sister
  2. A home to go home to
  3. Food
  4. Small gestures of kindness
  5. Comfy shoes
  6. Spring!
  7. Great customer service
  8. Music
  9. A new day
  10. Blueberry muffins :)

I will flourish in relationships with others this year by

Freeing myself of bad influences. There have been times in my life when I forgive a person over and over and yet they continue to be mean and hurt me. I did that for 11 years once. I kept on forgiving until one day, we just simply stopped talking to each other. And that was it. No closure, nothing. It took me 11 years to realize I had a toxic friendship. I don't want that to happen again, so I'm much more careful when choosing who I trust. And if I sense the friendship is one sided, it's probably not a healthy one.

Showing appreciation and love through small gestures of kindness. Over the last few weeks I've noticed many random acts of kindness being performed, and it warms my heart :) I want to show how much I care for my friends and family in simple ways, such as getting them something they need when they're stressed or baking a cake for an accomplishment.

Spending more time with friends and family. This is most likely the number one thing that will positively impact my relationships with others. The more time we spend together, the more intimate the relationship. While we are all very busy, making the time to talk and enjoy each other's company will bring us closer together. So make time for your friends and share in their joy, comfort them when they need comfort, laugh and tell stories to each other, and build a solid friendship.

Keeping jealousy at bay. Going to a relatively small school means that you know almost everyone on campus. One of the downsides is that you also know a lot of what happens in their lives. To stop the spread of unnecessary gossip, I want to focus on being happy for others when success or celebrations come their way instead of being jealous. Honestly, this will take some effort on my part because I find myself wishing I had what others have a lot. By containing jealousy, I'll have a more positive mindset when it comes to my relationships with my peers.

Reflection:

Last month we wrote on how we planned to flourish creatively in our lives. One of my goals was to discover my "style". Over the last month I've done a lot of thinking about what I want my style to be.

Creatively, I've discovered that my style is simple, clean, and elegant. I like smooth lines and whitespace. You could call it a minimalistic style if you wished, but I like to think that my style has some flair to it! ;)

Fashion wise, my style is pretty much the same: simple, clean, and elegant, but I emphasize comfort and practicality! I wore a dress and heels for 8 hours yesterday for the inauguration of my college's new president and I just about died from the pain. I just don't understand how some girls wear heels and carry a tote bag to school! Where do you put your books and papers??

Anyways, over the last month I've also spent more time sketching and observing. I've found that taking the time to sit and not worry about all the tasks I need to complete allows me to free up some creative space in my busy brain. I'll continue to flourish creatively, everyday, because it allows me to be me :)

Next month's prompt is how you will flourish emotionally. Examples would include: making things right with people, not holding any grudges, spending more time doing the things you love, etc. If you're new to the linkup, you can find all of the details right here! I hope you join us sometime, because I'd love to read what you have to say!

I Will Flourish...Creatively

The Flourish Linkup with The Kardia Blog I've been looking forward to this day for over a month now! :) I am beyond excited to welcome you all to the very first Flourish linkup. My hope is that this linkup will help you discover how to be successful, prosper, and thrive – in your own way. This month's prompt is Creatively, and I can't wait to read how all of you plan to flourish in this area of your life.

10 Things I Am Grateful For:

  1. Fresh, fluffy snow
  2. Loyal, trustworthy friends
  3. Laughter
  4. Ice Cream
  5. Warm socks
  6. The way the sun shines through the window
  7. Ice scrapers
  8. Heart to heart conversations
  9. Opportunities to be a leader
  10. Candles

I will flourish creatively this year by

Filling up a sketchbook with notes and drawings, without looking for perfection. Let's make a mess. Rarely are creative minds organized at first (if ever!). Ideas come at the most random times and if you take too much time to think, the great idea will be gone before you know it.

Observing the world and the people in it. One of my very good friends, Gina, inspired me to start going places with just a sketchbook/notebook in hand. In any creative field, the goal is to send a message or solve a problem. It's easier to communicate that message when you know who your audience is. Observing allows you to learn how people interact with one another, which is a good thing to understand!

Discovering my own style. Did you know that there are two types of creativity? Primary creatives bring an idea to life from nothing. They can turn a blank whiteboard into a masterpiece. Primary creatives have the ability and desire to make something that doesn't exist yet.

On the other hand, secondary creatives take an existing raw idea and add their own twist to it to make it even better than before. For them, starting with a blank whiteboard makes them feel ill-equipped. They are just as creative as primary creatives, but they start with an existing idea and spin off of it.

I believe that Pinterest has caused a dramatic increase in the amount of secondary creativity in the world today. We go to Pinterest for "inspiration" and "ideas", but when we create, how much of it is actually our own idea and not from something else? My goal this year is to develop my own style and create original pieces of work. I'm not saying I won't look for inspiration on Pinterest (because I absolutely LOVE Pinterest!), but I am going to make an effort to make a mark on the world by being unique.

Learning anything and everything.

There's no better way to foster creativity than by learning something new. Take that watercoloring class, go on that trip abroad, make a new recipe, teach yourself calligraphy - the possibilities are endless! Trying new things opens up your eyes to things you didn't know before. I plan on cooking something new at least twice a month, going somewhere new at least once a month, applying what I learn in school in my own life every day, and teaching myself a new skill once a month. Learning is fun! You don't just learn in school anymore, in fact, I believe real learning comes from doing things hands-on.

What the word "Flourish" means to me:

To me, "Flourish" means that I become the best person I can be. It means soaking up knowledge and wisdom and then applying it in my own life. It means growing, in all areas of life. That's why I created this linkup; so that others would have a common place to share their dreams and be encouraged to achieve them!

So are you with me? Go Flourish! :)

Introducing the Flourish Linkup

The Flourish Linkup with The Kardia Blog Happy Friday everyone! :) I am thrilled to be able to share something with all of you that has been percolating in my brain for a few weeks. (Percolate is my new favorite word! It means to brew or spread gradually) I'd like to introduce to you the Flourish linkup, my vision behind it, and how you can be a part of it :)

Part goal setting, part journal, and part action, the Flourish linkup is a way to help you discover how to be successful, prosper, and thrive - in your own way. Every person is different, and the road to what you define as success will be different than what other's will be. The linkup will be held the first Friday of every month, with the first linkup being February 6.

My dream is to help people live a life of purpose. Don't waste away your days. We all have a purpose, and we all have goals. Let's make them a reality.

For me, my life has one major goal. Everything else falls underneath it in various hierarchies. That one major goal is to share the love the God and to spread that love and encouragement to others. I want to see people be happy and thrive doing what they love!

You see, the goal of life isn't to make a lot of money, or live in the biggest house, or have a so-called "perfect" life - because nothing is perfect. The goal of life is live a life that means something. You'll feel fulfilled in life if the way you've lived it means something to you. Why sit around and not do anything? Take action. Go Flourish.

[Tweet "The goal of life isn't to make a lot of money; it's to make a life that means something."]

Outlined here is the general format for the Flourish linkup posts:

1. List 10 things you are grateful for

Gratitude changes everything. The first step to living a life you love, is to love what is in your life. Taking the time to write down or share what you're grateful for can dramatically change your viewpoint on things. So each month, begin the linkup by listing 10 things you're grateful for. You can go more in depth and explain why if you'd like, or you might choose not to. You can write this in a bullet list, a numbered list, or even in sentence format; whatever your heart desires.

[Tweet "The first step to living a life you love, is to love what is in your life. via @britthouchins"]

2. I will Flourish...creatively

This is where you can let your mind go wild! Each month's prompt will be the word that comes after Flourish. So, February's prompt will be Creatively. This section is where you can share how you plan to Flourish in that area of life. For example, you might outline a plan of action: steps to how you will become the best version of yourself in that area. I'm not setting rules for this section because I want it to be open to whatever your mind comes up with. I want whatever is posted in this section to be personal and mean something to you. How will you Flourish?

I'll also list a few questions to go with each prompt to help you get started. You don't need to answer the questions, they're just a starting point, but you can if you wish.

Ideas to get those brain juices flowing:

What is one thing out of your comfort zone that you will do this month? How do you foster creativity? By taking walks? Sitting in silence? What are some of your talents? What hobbies do you enjoy doing? How can you use your talents to bring joy to others?

3. Reflect

Each month you'll have the chance to reflect on what you posted about the previous month. What worked? What didn't? What can you do differently? How can you use your strengths, skills, and passion to play to your advantage?

But since this is the first linkup, this is what we'll do instead: Tell us what the word "Flourish" means to you.

And that's it! :) I'm super excited to learn from all of you and to join you on your journey to success! Let's go Flourish!

With the first linkup a whole month from now (February 6), if you'd like me to send you a reminder email the week before, sign up using the link below! I promise to only send you the reminder email and not spam you with random junk.

The Flourish Linkup Rules

1. Follow your host on Bloglovin'

2. Share your post based on the week's prompt! Please link to the actual post and not your homepage. It makes the posts easy to find :)

3. In your post, share the Flourish button or a link back to this post - this helps let others know more about the linkup.

4. Visit and comment on the post before yours and then visit and comment on at least one other blog. Leave encouraging comments! This is a community of dream seekers and we want everyone to strive for the best :)

5. Remember to use the hashtag #IWillFlourish when you promote your post on Twitter and/or Facebook, or if you post a picture of how you're Flourishing on Instagram!

I really hope you'll join in! :) I can't wait to read everyone's posts! Here's the link again if you'd like to sign up to get the reminder post about the linkup so you don't miss it:

I also hope to begin offering co-host spots eventually :) Keep an eye out in future posts for that announcement!
