My Business Moodboard

A classic, timeless moodboard. Filled with shades of pink, navy and bold typography.
Happy Friday! :) I'm so excited to share with you a glimpse of the branding concepts behind the business I'm starting this year. It's such a great feeling to see all the work you've put into something start taking shape. I've been working on the logos as a project for my graphic design class, and I may show a sneak peek when I get close to finishing them ;)

Without giving away too much information, here's what I'm aiming for as an overall feel for the brand:

  • Classic and timeless
  • Appeals to both males and females
  • Affordable quality products

I wish I could share more details, especially the name, but some more items need to be finalized before that can happen. Still, I can’t wait to share more of this project as it progresses with you all!

What do you feel when you see this moodboard? Let me know in the comments!

Beginner's Guide to Graphic Design: Creative Market

Why every designer should have a Creative Market account. *There are referral links present in this post. All opinions within this post are 100% honest – Creative Market is truly amazing!

Over the past year I've developed a newfound love for graphic design. This form of visual communication allows you to essentially speak a new language of lines, forms, colours, patterns and textures. There's something so wonderful about seeing someone fall in love with something you made.

But if you're anything like me - a beginning designer with no formal education (yet. I'm currently taking a graphic arts class and a web development class) -  you want to use resources that help you learn and become an even better designer. I stumbled upon Creative Market about a week or two ago and have fallen head over heels for this place!

So what exactly is Creative Market? It's an online marketplace where you can buy handcrafted, digital design content from creatives around the world to use in your projects. You can find everything from fonts, icons, and themes, to clipart, brushes, stock photographs and much, much more. Like an Etsy for design goods, Creative Market is a designers dream come true. I'll talk briefly about what the marketplace offers and share some of my favorite features!

Free Goods of the Week

This is my absolute favorite feature! Every week six different design goods are available to download for FREE! Keep in mind that these items usually sell anywhere between $12-25 per item. This week I downloaded the subtle paper textures and linocut brushes, and last week I got some watercolor speech bubbles!

Photos

Here you can find beautiful stock photos to use for blog posts and other designing needs. I recommend using photo bundles and looking for photos that will be versatile in different types of posts and graphics.

Graphics

This is where things get exciting! Creative Market has everything from Icons and Illustrations, to Mockups and Web Elements. If you're a designer, you'll have hit the jackpot with what's offered here! There are a ton of Illustrator and Photoshop brushes, blog design elements, background textures, etc. If you're just starting out and dabbling into graphic design, these resources will help you a lot. Plus, they give you some great inspiration!

Templates

Everything from business card templates to resumes to stationary - they're all here! These are perfect if you design your own cards or stationery and want a nice mock up or background to put them on for selling.

Themes

Creative Market is a great place to find deals on beautiful templates for your Wordpress blog. I wish I would have discovered this resource before I started my blog, as I found some amazing minimal blog templates with a design similar to the one my blog has, but for half the cost! I've seen so many overpriced templates that aren't even designed to be a beautiful website, but Creative Market offers some of the best with prices you can't beat. It just goes to show how curated their marketplace is :)

Fonts

I have a strong love for fonts. Each one has it's own personality and can transform text into something meaningful and beautiful! Creative Market usually has a free font each week, but there are also a lot of great typefaces for sale.

Add-ons

Add-ons include items such as actions, brushes, and plug-ins. Photoshop actions are great if you want to quickly edit a photo without having to do all of the work from scratch. Think of them like Instagram filters, only way better!

Overall, I am incredibly happy to have found such a great resource to use and learn from. Creative Market has something for everyone, and I'm sure you'll find an item (or two or twelve) that you love too! :)

What are some of your favorite items from Creative Market?

January Moodboard

January Moodboard
Fresh. That's the word that comes to mind when anyone says the words January or New Year around me. A new year. A clean slate. A fresh start. This January moodboard is inspired by fresh pastels, new growth, and dreams put into action. If you didn't know any better, you might have thought that this moodboard was for a spring month, like May!

I've heard so many people say that 2015 is going to be a great year. I know that I've said it soooo many times myself, but I can't help it! I feel different. I feel like big things are going to happen. That's why my mind automatically goes to the word Fresh when I think of January. Everything is clean and new, a pen on a smooth new page.

I'd like to know what you guys think! What's one thing you're looking forward to this year that makes 2015 different than all of the previous years? What are you going to change to live the life you want? Let me know in the comments! :)

Free Color Block iPhone Wallpapers

Free color block iPhone wallpapers in 3 different colors I am super picky when it comes to my phone backgrounds. I always find photos or backgrounds with too much going on really distracting. They compete with my apps and look messy in general. While I change my lock screen photo quite frequently, my home screen generally stays the same. I like minimalist backgrounds with just a simple pattern or a few colors. I got tired of my plain pink one yesterday and decided to create a few free color block iphone wallpapers for others to enjoy! I designed them in three different colors: pink/gray, peach/orange, and teal/blue. You can download them below! Just tap to open in a new window, then tap and hold to save to your photos. Enjoy!

Pink/Gray: iPhone 4 & 4s, iPhone 5, 5s, & 5c, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus

Peach/Orange: iPhone 4 & 4s, iPhone 5, 5s, & 5c, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus

Teal/Blue: iPhone 4 & 4s, iPhone 5, 5s, & 5c, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus

What type of backgrounds do you like having on your phone?

December Moodboard

December Moodboard | The Kardia Blog
It's the last month of 2014. Can you believe it? I feel like this year went by in the blink of an eye! The month of December is split into two parts for me. The first half is full of due dates, projects, finals, and one crazy sleep schedule. During this time, the weeks seem to drag on and go by fast all at the same time. Does that make sense? Then comes Christmas break. Oh, the joy of sleeping in for once and not having to worry about any projects for almost a whole month! The second half of December is full of giddiness and holiday joy. It's family bonding time and staying cozy inside the house while the snow gently falls. Lights illuminate the streets and Christmas music plays everywhere you go. Sometimes I wish this season lasted forever.

Happy Thanksgiving + A Reminder

Happy Thanksgiving! | The Kardia Blog Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I hope you all have a wonderful time with friends and family! Don't worry too much about that growing food baby, just enjoy the savory tastes of homemade goodness!

I also made up a quick reminder for everyone who is going out shopping on Black Friday.

(Is it just me or does anyone else not like that stores are opening at 6pm Thursday now? I work retail at Charlotte Russe during the holidays and I have to work from 5:30 pm to 10:00 pm on Thursday, then come back at 5:30 am and stay until 2:00 pm Friday. Crazy.)

Anyways, remember that even though a lot of deals and promotions are available throughout this weekend, nothing is a good deal if you don't need it. Just a thought.

Enjoy the rest of today!

It's not a good deal if you don't need it.

Do you go shopping on Black Friday?

November Moodboard

November Moodboard | The Kardia Blog
Is it really November 10 already? That means it's only four more days until our three year anniversary! Yesterday one of my friends took some couples pictures of us. It was probably one of the last nice days before winter really hits, and so I wore a pink dress. Needless to say, when the sun sets, a pink dress with no sleeves is not the best idea. Having some quality pictures of us will be really nice though! This moodboard is not the typical fall colors. I choose this palette because I love that quote "There's no place like home". With Thanksgiving just around the corner, many students (including myself) will be going home for the first time in months! I'm so excited to be able to be with my family again!

To me, November is a time of warmth and love. It's the month where people begin to scurry from their cars and into buildings to avoid the brisk chill. It's the month where laughter and delicious smells escape out of closed houses and into the open air. November is full of warmth. November is the hush before winter.

October Moodboard

October Moodboard | The Kardia BlogOctober is such a cozy month. It's when the air gets crisp, but it's still beautiful out. You get to wear fall boots again along with your favorite chunky sweater. Local coffee shops get filled on Sunday afternoons. Leaves start to change colors, and the wind blows them around. Ovens get warmed up after a summer of rest, the smell of warm baked goods filling the house. Rainy afternoons call for blankets and cuddling and sunny days encourage a quick bike ride. October makes me feel warm, even when the air is turning cold.

September Moodboard

September Moodboard | The Kardia Blog

This time of year is known as the season of back-to-routine for many families. Back to school, back to normal work hours every week, back to warm clothes, back to football season, you name it! For me, it's mainly back to school and back to fall weather, which makes me excited! I love the autumn season! Something about the golden colors and crisp air make me smile. This moodboard really represents how I feel about September in general. There's the mix of school, autumn, but still a hint of summer.

I have a weakness for fonts. Ever since I discovered that I could download them onto my computer and keep them in a font book, I've gone crazy downloading pretty fonts to use. My favorite types of fonts are script / handwritten / calligraphy. Maybe it's because they look feminine or maybe its the fluidity of the letters, I don't know. So today I'm sharing my favorite FREE script fonts with you! Enjoy!

Which font is your favorite? Are there any other script fonts that you love? Let me know! :)
